If you’re a Nepali citizen planning to study, work, or visit Japan, one of the key requirements for your visa application is demonstrating sufficient financial means. This is typically done by providing a bank statement showing an adequate balance to cover your expenses during your stay in Japan.

While the Japanese Embassy in Nepal does not specify exact amounts, based on standard practices and guidance from visa application centers, here are the general expectations:

Student Visa (Ryugaku Visa)

For students aiming to pursue language courses, vocational training, or higher education in Japan, it’s crucial to show that you can support yourself financially. Although there’s no officially stated minimum balance, it’s commonly recommended to have at least NPR 2,000,000 (approximately ¥2,000,000) in your bank account. This amount should cover tuition fees and living expenses for the first year. VFS Global

Required Documents:

  • Original bank statement (preferably from the past 6 months).

  • Certificate of deposit balance.

  • Income certificate or tax payment certificate issued by a public agency.

Note: If someone else is sponsoring your education, their financial documents and a letter of sponsorship will be required

Short-Term Tourist Visa

For those planning to visit Japan for tourism or to see relatives and friends, you must prove that you can cover your travel and stay expenses. While specific amounts aren’t stated, it’s advisable to have at least NPR 500,000 (approximately ¥500,000) in your bank account. VFS Global

Required Documents:

  • Original bank statement.

  • Certificate of deposit balance.

  • Income certificate or tax payment certificate issued by a public agency.

Note: If you’re being invited by someone in Japan, they may need to provide a letter of guarantee and their financial documents.

Dependent Visa

If you’re applying to join a family member residing in Japan, you need to show that either you or your sponsor can support your stay. A bank balance of at least NPR 1,500,000 (approximately ¥1,500,000) is generally advisable.

Required Documents:

  • Original bank statement.

  • Certificate of deposit balance.

  • Income certificate or tax payment certificate issued by a public agency.

Note: The sponsor in Japan may also need to provide proof of income and a letter of guarantee.

Working Visa (Including Specified Skilled Worker – SSW)

For work-related visas, especially under the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) category, the financial requirements may vary. While some employers provide financial support, it’s still recommended to have at least NPR 1,000,000(approximately ¥1,000,000) in your bank account to cover initial expenses.

Required Documents:

  • Original bank statement.

  • Certificate of deposit balance.

  • Income certificate or tax payment certificate issued by a public agency.

Note: Employers in Japan may also need to provide a letter of guarantee and proof of their financial standing.

Tips for a Successful Visa Application

  • Translation: If any document is in Nepali, provide an official English translation.
