If you’re a Nepali planning to study or work in Japan, one of the first questions that comes to mind is:
“कुन जापानी भाषा स्तर चाहिन्छ जापानको भिसा पाउनको लागि?”
Let’s break it down in simple terms based on the visa type, language tests, and real government requirements.

For Student Visa (Language School / College)

Japanese Level Required:

👉 No official requirement by the embassy, but most schools require at least basic Japanese.

Recommended:

  • JLPT N5 or JFT-Basic

  • Some schools even accept you without N5, but you must prove your intent to study seriously.

Why it helps:

  • Higher chance of school admission

  • Faster COE (Certificate of Eligibility) processing

  • Shows immigration that you’re prepared

For Work Visa (Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services)

Japanese Requirement:

Depends on the job & employer.
Some tech jobs in international companies may not need Japanese.

But for regular office work, N3 or higher is usually expected.

💡 In Short:

  • JLPT N2 or N3 = Competitive Advantage

  • Employers want you to communicate with coworkers, clients, etc.

For SSW (Specified Skilled Worker Visa)

This is the most popular working visa for Nepali citizens today.

Japanese Level Required:

👉 Mandatory: Pass JFT-Basic or JLPT N4

Minimum Accepted:

  • JFT-Basic A2 Level (easier than JLPT)

  • OR

  • JLPT N4 (one level above N5)

You’ll also need to pass a Skills Test in your specific industry (e.g., caregiving, food service, agriculture).

For Dependent or Spouse Visa

Language Level:

  • No language requirement

  • But it’s highly recommended to learn Japanese for daily life, healthcare, shopping, school communication, etc.

Many spouses struggle in Japan because they can’t communicate even simple things.
Start learning Hiragana, Katakana, and basic phrases!

Final Advice

  • If you’re planning for SSW, start preparing for JFT-Basic today — it’s easier than JLPT and accepted for visa.

  • For student visa, even if schools don’t ask, learning N5 will boost your visa approval and make life in Japan 100x easier.
