“I got my Japan visa—can I bring my family too?”
Yes, you can—but only if you follow the right process. Many Nepali applicants make critical mistakes that lead to delays or rejections. This guide will walk you through the exact steps to bring your spouse and children to Japan legally and smoothly.

What Is a Dependent Visa?

A Dependent Visa allows the spouse and children of a foreign national residing in Japan (on a work or student visa) to live with them. This visa is not applicable for parents, siblings, or other relatives.

Who Can Apply?

You can apply for a Dependent Visa if:

  • You’re legally married to a foreign national working or studying in Japan.

  • You’re the child of a foreign national working or studying in Japan.

Note: If your spouse is a Japanese national or permanent resident, the application process differs.

Required Documents

To apply for a Dependent Visa, you’ll need:

  • Valid Passport: Ensure it has at least 1.5 blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form: Completed and signed.

  • Photograph: One 2”x2” photo taken within the last 6 months.

  • Certificate of Eligibility (COE): Obtained by your sponsor in Japan.

  • Proof of Relationship: Marriage certificate for spouses; birth certificate for children.

  • Letter of Guarantee: From your sponsor in Japan.

  • Proof of Financial Stability: Sponsor’s employment certificate, tax payment certificate, and bank statements.

  • Residence Certificate (Juminhyo): Of the sponsor in Japan.

Note: Additional documents may be required based on individual circumstances.

Application Process

  1. Obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE):

    • Your sponsor in Japan applies for the COE at the local Immigration Bureau.

    • Processing time: Approximately 1-3 months.

  2. Apply for the Dependent Visa:

    • Once the COE is issued, your sponsor sends it to you.

    • Submit the visa application, along with the COE and other required documents, to the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country.

    • Processing time: Approximately 5-10 working days.

  3. Enter Japan:

    • Upon arrival, you’ll receive a Residence Card at the airport.

    • Register your address at the local municipal office within 14 days.

Can Dependents Work in Japan?

Dependents are generally not allowed to work full-time. However, they can apply for permission to engage in part-time work (up to 28 hours per week). This requires:

  • Applying for “Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted” at the local Immigration Bureau.

  • Receiving a stamp on the back of the Residence Card indicating the permission.

Visa Duration and Renewal

Dependent Visas are typically issued for periods of 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years. Before the visa expires, you must apply for an extension at the local Immigration Bureau. Ensure you have:

  • Updated proof of relationship.

  • Proof of continued financial stability.

  • A valid Residence Card and passport.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Incomplete Documentation: Missing or incorrect documents can lead to delays or rejections.

  • Insufficient Financial Proof: Ensure your sponsor can demonstrate adequate financial means to support dependents.

  • Applying Without a COE: While it’s possible to apply without a COE, the process is longer and more complex.

Final Tips

  • Start Early: Begin the application process well in advance to account for processing times.

  • Consult Official Sources: Always refer to the official websites of the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country for the most accurate information.

  • Seek Professional Advice: If unsure, consider consulting with immigration experts or legal professionals.

Bringing your family to Japan is a significant step. By following the correct procedures and ensuring all requirements are met, you can reunite with your loved ones and embark on this new journey together.
