Japan is one of the top destinations for Nepali students looking to study abroad. With quality education, advanced technology, and work opportunities, many students dream of studying in Japan. But before you pack your bags, the first step is understanding the Japan Student Visa — who it’s for, how to apply, and what you’ll need.

What is a Student Visa (留学ビザ)?

A Japan Student Visa (Ryūgaku Visa) is a long-term visa that allows international students to live and study in Japan. It is required for attending:

  • Japanese language schools

  • Universities

  • Vocational schools (senmon gakko)

  • Colleges and other academic institutions

 

Who Can Apply?

You can apply for a Japan Student Visa if:

  • You have been accepted by a recognized educational institution in Japan

  • You can prove that you have sufficient financial support for tuition and living

  • You meet the educational background or language requirements of the institution

 

Eligibility & Criteria

To qualify, you must meet the following:

🎓 Academic Requirement:

  • Must have completed at least 12 years of education (for higher education)

  • For language schools: +2 or SEE graduates may also apply

Language Requirement:

  • Some schools require basic Japanese knowledge (JLPT N5 or N4) or English (IELTS)

 

Financial Proof:

  • Show that you can cover at least ¥1,000,000–¥1,500,000 JPY (~10–15 lakhs NPR)

  • Documents can be from parents, sponsors, or your own bank account

Admission Letter:

  • Must have a valid admission or acceptance letter from the school

 

Required Documents

Here’s what you need to submit for a student visa:

  1. Valid Passport

  2. Completed Visa Application Form

  3. Recent Passport-size Photo

  4. Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
    (Issued by the school in Japan)

  5. Admission Letter from the school

  6. Bank Statements / Income Proof of sponsor

  7. Academic Certificates and Transcripts

  8. Certificate of Japanese or English Proficiency (if required)

 

Application Process

Step 1: Apply to a Japanese School

Choose your preferred school and submit required documents. Once accepted, the school applies for your COE.

Step 2: Receive the COE

The school sends you a Certificate of Eligibility (processing time: 1–2 months)

Step 3: Apply at the Japanese Embassy (Nepal)

Submit your COE, application form, and documents to the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu

Step 4: Wait for Processing

Visa decisions usually take 5–10 working days

Step 5: Receive Visa & Prepare to Fly

Once approved, you’re ready to enter Japan as a student!

 

⏳ Visa Duration

  • Most student visas are granted for 1 year to 2 years

  • They can be renewed based on your course

 

Can You Work on a Student Visa?

Yes! With special permission from the immigration office, you can work up to 28 hours per week during the term, and up to 40 hours/week during vacations

Common part-time jobs:

  • Convenience stores (コンビニ)

  • Restaurants

  • Factory jobs

  • Language tutoring (if qualified)
